ABOUT THE ARTWORK
In the great tradition of 18th and 19th century botanical artists, Linda
Kneeland paints exquisite forms of flora. Every detail of each flower is
given her utmost attention and care in rendering to true form. Linda's love
of the garden can be seen in each delicate brush stroke.
I begin by finding a flower or
plant that catches my eye. After
studying it and drawing sketches
of it from different angles,
I draw out the composition in graphite. Once
satisfied with the drawing, I transfer it to
watercolor paper. Then begins the slow work
of building depth and color with layers of "tea
washes".
A "tea
wash" is a layer of water with a light
amount of pigment in it. These
light layers give a sense of
translucence to the painting.
Once the form is really established, I have
the fun of putting in details with the smallest
of brushes.
I have loved discovering how individual
plants and flowers grow, how they’re structured,
how veins in leaves can differ from one plant
to another and how patterns repeat in nature.
I hope you enjoy having these museum quality
prints for your own.
Linda Kneeland
Some of the artwork is
rendered in watercolor and some in colored
pencil. Colored pencil work is much more crisply
detailed and watercolor work is more translucent.
All of the artwork is reproduced as gicleé prints, a very high resolution printing process that allows for millions of color variations and thus is able to give the translucent quality for which watercolors are known.
These giclee prints have been digitally mastered to bring out the finest
details and subtle colors of Linda's original works. All prints are
produced using the finest quality archival papers and inks, manufactured to
last over 100 years, preserving these treasures for generations to come.
All of the paintings on this site are available as 11" x 14" or 16" x 20" prints, and all are available as notecards.
